Physical Activity or Physical Education? Do We Need Them?
Both physical activity (PA) and physical education (PE) provide individual with the opportunity to be active. Often the words are used interchangeably but they differ in important ways. Nonetheless, there are several important features that can help us understand both concept:
a. Bodily movement of any type and may include recreational, fitness, and sport activities (i.e., jumping rope, playing soccer, taking the stairs, raking the leaves).
b. Environment is less structured: student have more chances to make their own choices and create rules for the activity.
a. Student learn and skills and knowledge needed to establish and sustain an active lifestyle.
b. There are assessment for student knowledge, motor, and social skills.
c. The program provide structured learning opportunities, appropriate instruction, meaningful content for all student.
Numerous evidence are against eliminating physical education and physical activity session in school to be replace with other subjects (e.g. science, mathematics). Claimed that eliminating student active time will help students improve their academic performance were false.
